2024 FROMM Pinot Gris

FROMM Pinot Gris 2024
Initially rather reticent on the nose for a Pinot Gris, it eventually reveals layers of sun-warmed orchard fruit, some ripe citrus, and the sense of walking in a pine forest on a hot day: there's a honeyed headiness, balanced with freshness. The palate shows notes of conference pear and white nectarine, summer hay meadow and soft florals. There's also a touch of apple-skin phenolic, which adds some intrigue and framing, as well as a delicious fresh-cut lemon acidity that carries through to a long and satisfying finish.

An excellent bouquet filled with scents of honey suckle and soft white spices, flowers and mineral soil-smoke of clay and tilled soils. Aromas and flavours of quince and green pear, a mix of apple and green-gauge plum ideas. Plenty of acidity delivers and freshness and saline quality then fine fruit tannins and an elegant leesy finish. Well made with medium+ length and complexity. Delicious, ripe, fresh and ready. Best drinking from day of purchase through 2029.

FROMM Pinot Gris Pét-Nat 2023
Relatively restrained nose of peach melba, lemon sherbet and green apple-skin. The restraint continues on the palate, which is taut and mineral at first, opening out into rounded notes of stone-fruit and a hint of warmed wheat grains. The mineral vein carries through to a long, clean and refreshing finish, with notes of apricot, and peach kernel.

The bouquet showcases a wine of youth and energy, floral and mineral tones then fruit scents of citrus and tree fruits, as the wine opens out in glass a clearer profile emerges with a delicate spice and complexity, baked apple and quince. Dry, taut, layered and delicious on the palate. A wine of intensity and vibrato, spice and ripe orchard fruit flavours. A lengthy finish with continued enticement with each new taste. Best drinking from late 2024 through 2028+.

We aim for a style of Pinot Gris that is generous and appealing yet still textured and complex. The 2017 release is a complex yet attractive Pinot Gris with ripe golden fruit, good palate weight and focussing minerality.

"Made from a blend of wines from the Wairau Valley, Brancott Valley and Waihopai Valley Pale orange tint that almost qualifies it for rosé status. Rich and moderately weighty wine, with a hint of sweetness that is balanced by fine, drying tannins. Quince, pear and stewed apple flavours with a subtle oyster shell character.
