Our Story

History

The first vines were planted in 1992 by Hätsch Kalberer and the Fromm team under the guidance of our Swiss founders, Georg and Ruth Fromm. Whilst the Fromm's returned to Switzerland many years ago, now with 25 year old vines, Hätsch continues to make Pinot Noir's that truly show the expression of the soil and can boast things like the oldest single vineyard Malbec in New Zealand. In 2017 we released a wine under the name Cuvee "H" to honour Hatsch's 25 years of making exceptional Pinot Noir in Marlborough.

George Fromm and Hatsch Kalberer met in the late 80's and decided to create Fromm Winery. George had a understanding of European viticulture and Hatsch had worked making wines in both Europe and New Zealand. Two years later in January 1992, after the talking became planning, and the planning then planting, Fromm Winery had officially started.

Since then Fromm Winery has built an international reputation by producing an array of outstanding wines that reflect both European style and kiwi ingenuity.

Today the passion for wine continues, now under the careful eye of old family friend and now owner Pol Lenzinger and Swiss business partner Georg Walliser. Georg Fromm has moved his focus back to the family winery in Malans Switzerland.

General Manager - William Hoare

William first fell in love with winemaking when lured across the road at the tender age of eleven to “help” at the Cloudy Bay Winery. That magic captivated him and for several years he travelled the globe working in famous wineries such as Au Bon Climat (USA), Klein Constantia (South Africa), Fromm Switzerland and Olivier Merlin (France). This culminated in the role of assistant wine maker at Fromm in 2000.

While he has since graduated to the role of General Manager and is now a part-owner of the company, he still contributes to winemaking.

Winemaker - Hätsch Kalberer

The foundation of Hätsch’s wine making career was the love of fine wine. In his native Switzerland he had ample opportunity to indulge this passion and had a very respectable wine cellar before he even had a car, let alone a license to drive it.

In 1982, Hatsch arrived in New Zealand and began what he calls a 10-year apprenticeship at Matawhero Wines in Gisborne. In 1992, he joined with Georg and Ruth Fromm in establishing Fromm Winery in Marlborough, where he continues today still following the founding beliefs that have served the company so well.

Sales, Marketing & Winemaking Adam Balasoglou

Cutting his professional teeth in the culinary world Adam cooked and imbibed his way through France, Italy and Spain which culminated in the opening of his restaurant in London.

Returning home he transferred his passion for food and wine into fine wine distribution and it was during this time Adam first crossed paths with William and Hätsch at Fromm. After selling the portfolio for many years he relocated the family to the source and now lives on site at the winery. Adam’s role at Fromm encompasses sales, marketing and helps in the winery during Harvest
