The first vines were planted in 1992 by Hätsch Kalberer and the FROMM team under the guidance of our Swiss founders, Georg and Ruth Fromm. While the Fromm's returned to Switzerland many years ago, now with 25 year old vines, Hätsch continues to make Pinot Noirs that truly show the expression of the soil and can say that FROMM has the oldest single vineyard Malbec in New Zealand. In 2017 we released a wine under the name Cuvee "H" to honour Hätsch's 25 years of making exceptional Pinot Noir in Marlborough.
Georg Fromm and Hätsch Kalberer met in the late 80's and decided to create FROMM Winery. Georg had a understanding of European viticulture and Hätsch had worked making wines in both Europe and New Zealand. Two years later in January 1992, after the talking became planning, and the planning became planting, FROMM WINERY officially started.
Since then FROMM Winery has built an international reputation by producing an array of outstanding wines that reflect both European style and Kiwi ingenuity.
Today the passion for wine continues, now under the careful eye of old family friend and now owner Pol Lenzinger and Swiss business partner George Walliser. Georg Fromm has moved his focus back to his family winery in Malans Switzerland.
Meet the Team
From the founder’s country of Switzerland and a member of the owner's family, Stephan joined the FROMM team in 2017 following a successful career in the luxury hotel industry. Since arriving in New Zealand, Stephan has felt at home. He has a passion for the outdoors and whether it is on top of a mountain or diving in the ocean, Stephan loves to adventure somewhere new.
Sales & Winemaker
Adam gets a kick out of being in gumboots one day and working in the winery or scooping cow pat for our compost, and two days later donning a formal jacket and to represent FROMM on the other side of the globe. He loves good honest wine, tasty food and pretty much any sport that’s ever being played. Adam is also a big family man, with three lovely rug rats and a wonderful wife, all of whom are very much immersed in his life at FROMM.
In 1982, Hätsch arrived in New Zealand and began what he calls a 10-year apprenticeship at Matawhero Wines in Gisborne. In 1992, he joined with Georg and Ruth Fromm in establishing FROMM WINERY in Marlborough, where he continues today still following the founding beliefs that have served the company so well.
Assistant Winemaker/Vineyard Manager
Daniel is a former construction worker who turned a passion for wine into a career. When life gave him lemons, he decided to make wine instead. Daniel came to Marlborough for a holiday, met a girl, got a job in the FROMM Team and lives the dream every day.
Lorraine enjoys her days working in the vineyard, but maybe not as much as her sidekick Bella the Golden Retriever who enjoys a good roll in the dirt. At harvest time Lorraine finds it very rewarding to hand pick the wonderful fruit that she and the team have worked hard to produce. Lorraine has been a part of FROMM for many many years and is proud to be part of a team that creates such wonderful wines. She finds being organic makes for a very enjoyable work environment.
Cellar Door Host
Rebecca, better known as Becks, has been part of the FROMM Team for a remarkable 16 years! Becks is full of knowledge about the FROMM journey and is always enthusiastic about showcasing FROMM Wines to the many wine enthusiasts and visitors that visit the Cellar Door. She is also very proud to be part of a winery that produces some of the very best red wines that Marlborough has to offer.
Lauren is the newest addition to the FROMM family. Lauren recently relocated from Australia to Marlborough. With a background in all things office administration, a love of wine and a keen creative eye, this Aussie is thrilled to be part of the FROMM team. Lauren has always been fascinated by the wine making process and is eager to expand her knowledge and (of course) taste all the amazing the wines on offer!
